Women & Leadership Australia is proud to announce the 2023 recipients of the Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership.

The 2023 National recipient is Karen Mundine. Ms Mundine is the CEO of Reconciliation Australia and a passionate advocate for women and First Nations people in our society.

Ms Mundine said of the award; “I carry in me my family history and the history of the Bundjalung Nation. My grandmother, mother and aunties – role models to me and many others – set standards and expectations through their resilience and their own achievements.

“My life experiences might be a bit different to them but I share their resourcefulness and resilience, their determination to live their lives on their own terms and with purpose.

“To achieve real, meaningful change – to our systems, to the way things have been done in the past – we need to have a diversity of people at the table. I remind all women, don’t underestimate what you might bring to the table – own it, everything you know you are, and all the things that you’re not – your perspective is unique.”

The State and Territory recipients include:
  • QLD – Rochelle Courtenay, Founder of Share The Dignity
  • ACT – Natasha Bullock, Assistant Director, Collections and Exhibitions, National Gallery
  • VIC – Georgie Harman, CEO of Beyond Blue
  • NSW – Tu Le, Lawyer, Marickville Legal
  • SA – Moya Dodd, Lawyer and former Vice-Captain, The Matildas
  • NT – Pat Anderson AO, Chair, Batchelor Institute
  • WA – Zahra Al Hilaly, Youth Advocate, Speaker Author
  • TAS – Commissioner Donna Adams APM, Commissioner of Tasmania Police and Secretary of the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management
WLA’s CEO, Karen Taylor GAICD, said that the awards represent an opportunity to further advance gender equity in Australia; “Traditionally, women have been under-valued in work and society. WLA’s purpose is to further advance gender equity across Australia, and these awards create an opportunity to do exactly that. By recognising and acknowledging the contributions of women, we create visibility and encourage appreciation of the work these exceptional women have done.”

The Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership recognise the contribution of women at a National and State/Territory level to the advancement of gender equality across Australia. More specifically the awards recognise individual women that have, through their actions, improved the likelihood of other women within their field of endeavour having greater access to leadership equality.

Created in 2014 and nominated by members of the WLA community, the underlying purpose of the awards is to increase visibility and momentum for the push for Australian women to receive equitable access to leadership positions across all industries and the broader community.

The recipients of the 2023 Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership will accept their awards at the Australian Women’s Leadership Symposiums, held online and in-person across Australia. You can see the full line-up here.
